When should I use an ATA Carnet?

An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows for the temporary import of goods into a country. Since it is accepted by both Canada and the United States, it can serve as a shipment type for goods clearing through both the CBSA and CBP.

Carnets are commonly used for commercial samples, professional equipment, and goods for exhibitions and fairs. To qualify, the goods must not be consumable items, such as agricultural products. Depending on the validity period, goods can be imported under a Carnet for up to one year.

The party temporarily importing the goods is responsible for obtaining the Carnet. The importer should notify the carrier that a Carnet is being used and provide them with the document, as the driver will need to present it at the border.
