What are the Rules for WMI Data
Rules for WMI Data:
• The maximum length for the WMI field should be 6 alphanumeric characters.
• The 3rd digit of the WMI determines the expected length of the WMI field.
For example: If the 3rd digit DOES NOT = 9, then the data entered in the WMI field MUST be 3 alphanumeric characters (ex: A23)
If the 3rd digit DOES = 9, then the data entered in the WMI field MUST be 6 alphanumeric characters (ex: 129XYZ). FYI: the “XYZ” portion of the WMI are the 12th, 13th, and 14th digits of the Vehicle Identification Number.
• The WMI should be entered without breaks or separators (i.e. either “A23” or “129XYZ”).
• A manufacturer that builds greater than 1,000 vehicles per year, uses the first three characters of a vehicles VIN as the WMI unique identifier (these are 3 digitWMI’s. Ex: A23).
• A manufacturer that builds fewer than 1,000 vehicles per year, uses a 9 as the third digit and the 12th, 13th and 14th position of the VIN for the balance of the unique WMI (these are the 6 digit WMI’s. Ex: 129XYZ).
• If unsure of the specific WMI, the client or manufacturer should be contacted to identify the correct WMI to be used for a specific vehicle for import.
The WMI data is only mandatory for the Appendix G program, which is for the importation of new fully complying vehicles originating directly from a registered foreign manufacturers.
If a client, however, supplies a WMI in the Manufacturer (MF) or Assembler (DFT) fields for other RIV programs, SWI will perform the 3 or 6 digit validation as noted above.
